Located on the western side of Greece, in the Ionian Sea, Lefkada is a Greek island where visitors do not need to take the ferry to go: Lefkada island is connected to the Greek mainland by bridge, which makes it easy and more economic to access by car. The most beautiful Lefkada beaches are located on the western side of the island. Porto Katsiki, Egremni and Kathisma are the most impressive places to swim in Lefkada, all three with exotic waters and surrounded by steep cliffs. Kathisma is the most organized beach on the island, very family friendly and with many summer activities and Lefkada studios. Porto Katsiki and Egremni are less organized but have very impressive landscape. On this side of the island are other fantastic and more secluded Lefkada beaches, such as Mylos, Kalamitsi, Tsoukalades, the lovely beach of Agios Nikitas and others.
Two beaches, one on the northern side and the other on the southern side of the island, are ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Agios Ioannis and Vassiliki get very popular among surfers and even have surfing centers that offer courses and rent the necessary equipment. Lefkada beaches on the eastern side of the island are less impressive but picturesque. These beaches are usually pebbled and small, surrounded by beautiful greenery that almost reaches the seawater.
Lefkada Town is the largest settlement on the island. This is a nice town with special architecture and a large port where fishing ports and private yachts moor in summer, creating a romantic atmosphere. At the entrance of the town, there is the Castle of Agia Mavra, constructed in the Medieval times and a sign of the important Lefkada history. Agios Nikitas and Sivota are probably the most picturesque villages in Lefkada, while also beautiful is Vassiliki village, on the southernmost point of the island.
Due to its port, Nydri village in Lefkada gets very busy in summer and attracts many visitors, which makes it a great place to stay if you are looking for action and nightlife. Nikiana and Lygia are quiet fishing villages on the eastern side of the island where, in fact, some luxurious Lefkada hotels have been constructed. A drive around will bring you to many other picturesque Lefkada villages in the mountains, such as Karya, Exantheia and Poros.
Apart from beautiful beaches and villages, sightseeing is few in Lefkada Greece. The most important attraction is the Venetian Castle of Saint Maura, at the entrance of Lefkada Town, just before the small bridge that connects the island to the Greek mainland. This castle was constructed in the 13th century AD to protect Lefkada in times of war. Another interesting sight close to Lefkada Town is the Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni, surrounded by a forest of pine trees.
In short drive distance from Nydri is a location of great natural beauty: the Waterfalls of Dimossari. Following a scenic path, visitors arrive in a beautiful waterfall that falls from the highest spot of a white rock. Many visitors actually swim there, although the water is very cold!
